FAMILY POTLUCK June 9th

Our final Guide meeting of the year will be next Tuesday, June 9th.
We have reserved the Picnic Shelter in the tenting area at Living Forest Campground for our Family Potluck, from 6pm to 8pm. We hope all girls and families will attend. If you are unable to attend, please let the leaders know.
There are picnic tables in the shelter, but you might like to bring camp chairs ‘just in case’. Please bring your own plates/cutlery/cups.
The Unit will provide beverages.
When making your food contribution please think enough to feed approx. 10 people. Please bring the food ready to eat, in a labelled container, with serving utensils..
At tonight’s (June 2nd’s) meeting, we will be planning our menu for the Family Potluck. Your Guide’s choice for her family’s contribution to the dinner is:

Jun 2nd Meeting...last regular meeting

Wow! What a hot day/evening! We had planned on spending much of the meeting outside, but it was too hot until about 8. All but K. were there (she had a ball game: needing to be in two places at once!) - and only H. and C. for Guiders (other two had conflicts). We talked to the girls about next week and the final camp, and then divided them into two groups to do Menu Planning and Activity Planning for the June Camp. We then talked about the June 9th meeting at Living Forest, and the girls planned some skits for entertainment. We had them come up with ideas of what they want their families to bring for the Potluck. The Unit will be providing beverages; families need to bring their eating stuff. We ended the night with same free play out in the playground, then Closing.

SCIENCE NIGHT at VIU Tues. May 26

Tuesday May 26th we are going to a Science Presentation at VIU...MORE INFO to be posted on this...it costs $10 but the unit will pay 1/2 of the cost.

Next Camp: June 19/21

We are actively planing our next and final Camp, to be held at Christine and Heather's place in Cedar on Father's Day weekend...more to follow!

Year Overview

I hope to be able to do more updating on our Chase River GG Blog in the next month or so..my hopes are to have our 08-09 Guiding year updated fully before we start the new 09-10 Guiding year. To try and keep the entries organized I may just work with some of the posts already done.
NEXT YEAR I will make sure that there are posts done every month...at least one...so then entries can be edited as the month goes on. I'm still learning all about doing Blogs so this is still definitely a work in progress!

GARDENING BADGE: Tues May 19th

Last night we did our Gardening Badge...at Gillian's place. All girls were there except T., who is away for a few days. Each Guide made her own hanging basket, using bought plants along with a bit of perennial trailer (I forget the name of the plant, even tho I have some here in my garden) - Gillian did a walk around the garden and together with the girls took a potful of the perennial out to use in the baskets. Then to the backyard, where the girls each got a hanging basket and found a spot on the big blue tarp. Gilian made a basket for T. as the sample, then the girls did their own with the leaders going around helping where needed. Several girls stayed quite clean, while others joyfully got quite dirty...notbably RS and KS (ooops..I just realized both our K girls have the same last initial maybe call one K4 and the other K5 for their grades?)..so I guess it was K4 who was the dirty one....Everyone did a great job of their baskets, and with care the Belated Mother's Day gifts should become real show-stoppers over the summer.
OK...I JUST UPLOADED SOME OF THE PHOTOS...If anyone wants a copy, or some of the not-uploaded photos, just let me know.

District Camp: WOW!

(photos are Top=Fri and Bottom=Sun) Photos: 1: Guides putting up tent Friday evening 2: T: What is this stuff? 3: D. 'defusing the bomb' (actually unwinding yarn!) 4: K. eating Sat. morning snack 5: K. & K. learning how to do invisible writing and then read it 6: A. & T. making fingerprint people 7: Our Guide Group (the 5 girls who went to camp)...very silly group photo 8: Cpl Nielson & A/Cst doing really great Canadian CSI Presentation...here discovering evidence to solve the crime 9: More CSI Presentation 10: Our Saturday evening Campfire 11: Our 5 Guides all ready for Camp Closing 12: K. receiving award for 'helping cleanup without being asked' 13: Our Guides (and one Guider) and our VERY neat pile of gear
District Camp was great: we were blessed with great weather, and our Guides were great Campers. We leaders were very glad we had the girls tent during our April Camp, as it was much easier for them to put up/down the tent, and to manage sleeping together in the tent. Several Pathfinders volunteered to help the girls with the up/down, which was nice.

Friday evening: arrival, set-up, welcome/rules, nametags, mug-up, bedtime.

Saturday: Breakfast (ok, but not great) after which Sparks joined us and girls were broken up into 4 Groups for the morning. Morning centres included Costume decorating; Outdoor activities ('bomb defusing'; scavenger hunt; snack); Kitchen CSI Activities; Crafts (Periscope). After Lunch (which we picked up in the Kitchen and ate out in the sun) the Sparks went home and everyone else had 'Flat Happy'...not much quiet or flat, but the girls were happy! Afternoon activities were with our group levels, so both Cedar & Chase River Guides were together. Our activities included a Moorecroft Service Project (raking/tidying around the Playground/pathway and planting some bedding plants in the entry garden); a Craft (painted mirror for Mom); and an Outdoor Camp Activity (with paid Moorecroft staff at the Archery Range - archery and a game). The afternoon was nice and relaxing, which the girls seemed to enjoy.

About 5pm our RCMP guests arrived, and after checking out their location and 'setting up' they joined us for Dinner at 6. After dinner everyone went down to Kennedy Hall for our RCMP/CSI PRESENTATION..which was a huge success. They did a 'mock crime', using 3 Guiding members of different ages - and I was a part of the beginning, calling 911 to report the crime, stopping it, and being the first witness. Everyone enjoyed it, and there were lots of great questions. Cpl Neilson and the A/Cst (along with his daughter, who knows some of our girls) definitely added to the CSI THEME. I thanked them, and gave each a box of Cookies.

After the Presentation, we went up for MugUp which also included an ice-cream-cake for one of the Pathfinder's birthday. Following MugUp everyone made their way to the Campfire Circle on the Point where we had a very good Campfire. Noreen had put up a list at the beginning of Camp with space for songs/song leaders - every group was well represented, making Campfire very inclusive. After Campfire, quick stop at the Washroom (Moorecroft calls it the Splash House!) we headed to bed. Our Guides were very, very tired, and when everyone was in bed we leaders could only hear muted talking for a short time!

Sunday: Up around 7, some packing before Breakfast which was 8:15ish. Breakfast Sunday was definitely the best meal, enjoyed by all I think. Because it was Mother's Day, we had Belgian Waffles & Strawberries, plus the usual extras. Many of us went back for seconds, me included. After breakfast up to the tents for final packing and taking down the tents. With a bit of help from several Pathfinders the girls did a good job of taking down their tent, and Heather and Gillian took down the leader tent. We were very, very proud of our Guides because they all did a good job of their own packing, and we all walked down together with all their gear and the two tents. (We leaders had already taken our own gear down and put in our cars). Our Guides either were well packed bedroll-style, or backpack-style...no garbage bags!!!

Camp Closing - One of our girls got a ThankYou prize for helping to clean up without being asked after MugUp...great work, K.!

All in all, a great District Camp, and of the 3 District Camps I've been to, I think the best one. I took a lot of pictures, and will be posting some in the next few days.

Spring Break - Jun Meetings

The last of the three sections of our year...the regular meetings from Spring Break til the very end. I will also try to colour-code the postings to make them easier to follow.

Jan - Spring Break Meetings

Seems logical to break up the year into 3 sections: Sep-Dec (4 months, tho both Sept & Dec are not full meeting months); Jan-Spring Break (2 1/2 months, but busy months); and Spring Break-end of June (3 1/2 months, definitely busy months!)
More to be added!

Catch-Up from Sep - Dec

Since I started this Blog so late in the Guiding year, I'm trying to decide how best to update everything exciting we have done. Next year will be easier as we will already have the Blog, and I can maybe even use it to post notices....not sure of that yet tho.

I will edit this further and add more, but I'm just putting an Outline of the year to start with, and then will fill in details.

DISTRICT CAMP 8 - 10 MAY 2009

This weekend is our CSI Challenge-themed District Camp: 5 Guides and 3 Guiders will be attending.
Christine has found a surprise special Guest Speaker for Saturday night.
We are all hoping the weather will be really great!
More later, after Camp - with photos!

April 17/19 Spring Camp at Creina

All 9 Guides attended our April Unit Camp, and great fun was had by all.

April 28/09: Wildflower Night

Tuesday, April 28th our Guide Unit visited Harewood Plains to work on our Wildflower Badge. Weather was great, and all but two Guides were there (one was sick, and the other was finishing a school project). We explored a lot of the area, and the girls (and leaders!) learned a lot of the flora in the area. Some pictures:
