Guiding Year Calendar!

At the top of the page, just below the page banner, you will see:

Home          CAMP PAGE        NEWSLETTERS    2012/13 Guiding Year

To see the Calendar for our unit for this Guiding year, just click on the 2012/13 Guiding Year       button.  I'm still working on putting what we HAVE  done, and we will also be putting future events/activities on the calendar as we have them planned.

This helps you to see the Guiding year 'at a glance'.  You've probably also noted that I am trying to do a Blog entry for each meeting...

Tues, Jan 8th - 1st meeting of January

At our 1st Guide meeting of 2013 we will be:
  • sharing about what everyone has done since Dec 4th
  • playing some games
  • and enjoying  presentations by Guides who have worked on badges of the Christmas holiday and are ready to be 'tested'

Dec 4th - last Guide meeting before Christmas

Another night of caroling - this time for our regular meeting.

The weather was actually quite nice most of the day - it started raining just in time for our Caroling Night!  We caroled at Country Grocer, then walked around South Parkway Plaza and sang twice before returning to sing again at Country Grocer.  We then treated everyone to a Hot Chocolate in the Country Grocer Cafe and the girls all got a 'free' Christmas Cookie.

Nov 30th at Nanaimo Kiwanis Village

We joined with the other two Guide units in our district to see some Christmas songs to seniors at Kiwanis Village at their Christmas Light-Up.  It was obvious our audience really enjoyed the girls' singing!

November 27th - our Guide Christmas Party

The girls had the chance to make some Xmas crafts, and are holding some of their creations in the photo.  On the floor in front are the 'Cups of Kindness' they filled - these will be given to deserving children attending a Christmas breakfast in town.
Our Guide Enrolment on Nov 20th:

On Nov 19th we visited a local Seniors Centre: we did a 'mini Guide meeting for them.  The photo shows 5 of our special audience - we had about 35 seniors in all.  Many of the women remembered some of the songs we sang from their Guiding days!  We noticed a few singing along, especially with Taps!

Our Hallowe'en Party - we asked the girls to be creative and wear home-made/NOT store-bought costumes - this is what we all looked like:

1st Chase River Guides

What a great looking unit - all in uniform now!

But next meeting we won't be in uniform - we will be in our HALLOWE'EN COSTUMES!  Our costumes won't be 'store-bought' but creative, home-made costumes that are both $$ and eco friendly!  Look for some great photos from the party!

WTD 2013
WORLD THINKING DAY 2013

The 2013 theme

We have chosen two Millennium Development Goals (MDG) as themes this WTD – MDG 4: Reduce child mortality and MDG 5: Improve maternal health. Our messages for 2013 are “together we can save children’s lives” and “every mother’s life and health is precious”. MDG 4 and 5 are closely linked and both are key issues affecting girls and young women around the world.

Focus Countries

World Thinking Day is a way for girls and young women to learn about life for their peers in other countries and to explore the similarities and differences in the Girl Guide and Girl Scout experience across the globe. For 2013, we have identified five focus countries – Republic of Ireland,
Jordan, Malawi, Pakistan and Venezuela.

Did you know ...
• The mortality rate for children born to mothers under the age of 20 is 73 per cent higher than the children of
mothers over the age of 20
• Violence against girls and women – along with other forms of gender inequality – is one of the root causes of child
and maternal death. Girls’ and women’s rights are an important tool for achieving MDGs 4 and 5
• Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls aged 15-19 years in many
low- and middle-income countries
• Child and maternal deaths are not just an issue in the developing world. Children in the United States are less likely
to reach their fifth birthday than in 40 other developed countries
• The number of child deaths fell from 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 20103. While this is good news, it is still
well below the target of a 67 per cent fewer child deaths by 2015

1st Chase River Guides - 2012/2013

New Guiding Year!  I was totally surprised to realize I've not used our 1st Chase River Guide Blog since 2009!  Definitely time to change that.

If anyone has noticed, I changed the 'header' for the Blog, using our NEW District Crest.  I think it would be a neat idea if our UNIT had our own crest...wouldn't that be neat?

So far this year we have 11 Guides - we need more!

We've already had 6 meetings, one 'extra' activity and lots more fun stuff!

We've not taken any photos but mean to change that soon!

Trillium (Guider Christine) has an International Student from Germany living with her - and she is now officially a member of Girl Guides of Canada!  Serafina attended her first Ranger camp on the weekend.  We are really grateful for all her help and hope she enjoys spending time with us as much as we enjoy having her with us.

In the next weeks we have our Halloween Party, Fall Sleepover, Enrollment, a visit to a seniors home, Christmas Party and Caroling.  Fun!

New Guide uniform

NEW GUIDE UNIFORM!

New uniforms for all levels of Guiding except leaders this fall!  Everyone will be in blue once all girls have new style uniforms!  But remember that any official uniform is always completely acceptable!
